Principle of asymmetric bunch merging
The possibility of doing an asymmetric bunch merging is very important for the accumulation of ions in the decay ring. The "freshly" injected ions are merged with the core of the circulating bunch pushing "older" ions towards the edge of the bunch where they eventually will be lost. Below is an example of asymmetric bunch merging:
